Ever wonder why paper is warm when it comes out of your laser printer?
Paper fresh out of the printer is warm because of the fuser unit! A fuser unit is a pair of heated rollers within the printer that fuses the toner onto the paper being printed on.
Toner particles are pulled to the paper to create the desired text and images as the paper passes the imaging drum. Then, the paper is directed to the fusers so that the toner can be melted into the fibers of the paper so that it stays permanently. Both heat and pressure are applied to the fusers to enable this function. After the paper is passed through the fuser assembly, it is rolled out to the output tray.
Why doesn’t the paper catch fire from the heat?
The paper does not catch fire from the heat of the fuser unit because of speed. Paper passes through the fuser so quickly that there is no time for a spark to ignite.
Why does the fuser assembly need to be replaced?
The fuser assembly needs to be replaced every so often because of the constant wear within the printer. Dust particles from toner and papers latch onto the parts of the printer.
For example, because toner is a powder, it commonly sprays onto parts of the printer when being pulled to the paper. Dust from the paper also accumulates within the printer from all that constantly passes through.
The build-up of all these particles creates scratches on the fuser, which leaves lines on the printed output. Most printers have alerts that let you know when your fuser assembly needs to be replaced. However, if you see lines on your pages, you’ll know that it’s time for a new fuser! Fuser replacements can be purchased separately, but for some printers they are included in the printer maintenance kit.
